Karen Schaefer is an Ohio-based freelance journalist and independent radio producer with more than 15 years experience in public radio news, much of it focusing on environmental issues. She's won more than 65 national, regional and state awards for her work for WCPN-Cleveland and WKSU-Kent and has broadcast her work on NPR, PRI, American Public Media, the CBC, the BBC and Voice of America. Schaefer is a long time member of the Society of Environmental Journalists, a two-time alumnus of the Institutes of Journalism and Natural Resources, and a veteran of environmental journalism training programs with Michigan State University's Knight Center for Environmental Journalism, Pennsylvania and Ohio Sea Grant, and The Environment Report. Her most recent work has appeared on WBEZ-Chicago, NPR's Only A Game, Michigan Radio, WCPN-Cleveland, The Allegheny Front, and Great Lakes Echo. Karen lives east of Cleveland and just 13 miles south of Lake Erie, where she spends much of her free time in the lakeside marshes and wetlands.
