Our farms can be the source of environmental problems, but they often yield the fruits of celebration, especially in late summer.  It's the season of county fairs! The Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs says over five and a half million people attend these agricultural showcases every year.

Last summer was a tough one for farmers and county fairs. Dry weather, a sluggish economy, and looming fears of diseases spreading from animals to humans put a damper on festivities. But the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs says entries in livestock contests are only down. The association says attendance is up, though, as county fairs remain an accessible family activity.

The Allegheny Front talked to several Washington County Fair attendees, who look forward to the food and various contests.  Each county in Pennsylvania has their own take on the cherished tradition, though.
